Gift for Indian wedding anniversary-11years?

My new friends have invited us to their large catered anniversary. I think it will be fun, educational and full of color and good food but I want to be polite and also let her know I care. Nothing big, just appropriate if there is anything. I know there are specific things per year in the Christian faith for wedding anniversaries, but I didn’t know about the Indian culture or religion? Thank you!

Consider Giving Pet Memorial Plaques

Pet Memorial Plaques are the Best Way to Tell Everyone What Your Pets Meant to You

Pet memorial plaques are becoming recognized as the prefect gift for the close friend or family member that has lost a treasured pet. Losing a loyal pet these days is just as difficult as losing a close family member. A great deal of time and money is spent finding the perfect urn or gravestone or casket. The loss of a cherished pet is as important to work through as the loss of a member of the family. While all of these kids of products are necessary, they do nothing to help people get through the grieving process. Pet memorial plaques were designed to deal with this very issue.

Pet memorial plaques focus us on the life of the pet, thereby shortening the grieving process. Custom pet memorial plaques are great tools for recollection of the good times with pets. Along with a favorite picture of the pet, you can put information like the years, breed and a short description of what they meant to you. This plaque will help them get past the grief, because every time they glance at the wall where this thoughtful gift is displayed, they will be brought back to the good times and will find themselves celebrating the life of their four legged friend, not the death. Think about it. We have photographs and other mementos of the family and friends that we have lost to help us contemplate the joys that those people brought to us and the impact they had on our lives. We do not dwell on their deaths.

If you have lost a beloved pet or know someone who has, consider getting pet memorial plaques as a way to permanently honor the memory of the impact they had on our lives. This plaque is one of the most thoughtful gifts that anyone can receive during such a trying time. You never have to worry about your gift being forgotten becasue we print a personal message from you on the back of the plaque. Every time they look at the back of their pet memorial plaques, they will remember that you understood.

Catholic Crucifix: The Ultimate Symbol of Faith

The Catholic crucifix is the ultimate symbol of the Catholic Church. The representation of Christ as Redeemer and Savior is the central theme of Christianity. The Catholic crucifix serves as a reminder of Christ’s sacrifice and love for all men.

The Catholic crucifix is a Latin cross with the Body of Christ (corpus) upon it. It is used to symbolize the redemption of mankind through Christ’s sacrifice. The Catholic crucifix is the central symbol of the Catholic faith; no Catholic church in the world is without one.

History of the Catholic crucifix:

The Catholic crucifix was not widely used before the 5th century A.D. Prior to the 5th century the Lamb of God was the most common symbol used to represent Christ.

The Council of Constantinople in 629 A.D. ordered: “That, instead of the lamb, our Lord Jesus Christ will be shown hereafter in His human form in images so that we shall be led to remember His mortal life, His passion, and His death, which paid the ransom for mankind”–this image was the Catholic crucifix.

On the early Catholic crucifix the corpus was usually stylized, but from the 9th century A.D. on medieval artists started to depict increasingly more realistic portrayals of Christ and His suffering. The Renaissance saw a reversion towards more ideally conceived imagery, but the dramatic and more accurate depictions of Christ would return to the Catholic crucifix during the baroque period.

The Catholic crucifix came to be recognized as the universal symbol of Christianity, symbolizing the sacrifice of Christ, and the consequent redemption of mankind. Reformation Protestants in the 16th century, however, rebelled against the use of the Catholic crucifix and stripped the corpus from the cross, so as to but greater emphasis on the Resurrection. Thus, the crucifix came to be identified specifically with the Catholic Church, the bare cross with the “Reformers.”

The Catholic crucifix has, over the years, become a powerful symbol in both art and jewelry. By wearing the Catholic crucifix many Christians around the world proudly proclaim their love and faith in Christ as Redeemer. Here is a good page to view the different styles of the Catholic crucifix.

Where is the best place to purchase a Catholic crucifix:

To get an idea of the different styles and prices that are available in a Catholic crucifix it is more convenient to view them online before shopping around at local jewelry stores.

Retail jewelers will sometimes carry a small selection of Catholic crucifixes, but you are more apt to find a greater selection online. Just type “Catholic crucifix ” into an Internet search engine like Google or Yahoo and you will find several reliable websites that specialize in the Catholic crucifix.

The cost of a Catholic crucifix is dependant upon many variables. In solid 14K yellow or white gold, Catholic crucifixes should cost about $50 to $300 depending on size.

Faith in Christ, faith in life:

Faith is the central pillar of Christian life. Without faith there would be no hope, and without hope there would be no reason. The Catholic crucifix is the strongest symbol of faith; faith in Christ as Savior and Redeemer. Faith in all that is good and right. The Catholic crucifix is much more than a representation, it is a way of life.

Christening Favors – Beautiful Ideas For Baby’s Christening

A baby’s baptism or christening is one of the most important religious ceremonies in a child’s life, as the beginning of that child’s spiritual experience. To mark this special occasion, families often have a party at the parents’ or grandparents’ home afterwards to celebrate the joy of this event.

To thank guests for their attendance, the host of the party may provide christening favors for them to enjoy and remember this special day. Here are some ideas if you are planning a baptism or christening party for your special child:

The Cross. This universal symbol of Christ’s love and purity is very fitting to use in your baptism or christening favors. The cross is a symbol that is cherished by so many people that it will touch them and become a meaningful gift for them to enjoy for years to come. You can find the cross image in many beautiful favors, like bookmarks, candle votives, picture frames and sweet silver charms. The cross can be used as part of the theme of your baptism or christening party, with invitations, linens and other religious items incorporating this wonderful image of God’s eternal love for all of mankind.

Angels among us. Yes, babies are truly angels among all of us. They bless us with their not only their presence, but with their wonder and innocence as we celebrate the joy and new life that they bring to our families. If your little one is your angel, then you will want to convey this message with angel themed baptism or christening favors at your party. This theme is very easy to find in so many baby party favors, like candles, napkins, balloons and even take home items like bookmarks and key rings. To make it extra special, include the baby’s birthstone colors in the theme along with the angels to make the favors one of a kind – just like your little angel.

Noah’s Ark. If you are planning a baptism or christening party, particularly if you are celebrating the birth of multiples, you may want to go with a Noah’s Ark or animal theme for the little one(s). The Noah’s Ark theme is wonderful for all babies as it includes lots of cuddly baby animals, stuffed animals in a variety of sizes and colors and the favored childhood biblical tale of Noah and his ark. Even adults will delight in this sweet theme as they enjoy all the animal themed favors and d

Personalized Kids’ Gifts For Christenings – Some Cute Ideas!

Christenings are becoming more and more elaborate affairs and certainly in my country, Cyprus, they are becoming occasions which warrant great planning of themes, timing, venues, table settings and of course the traditional favours, cakes, outfits and beautiful gifts.

It is now also possible to customize many things, not only can you print personalized invitations, but the cake, the favours, table settings, decorations and presents can all be customized and tailored to the theme and of course include the child’s name.

As a parent and recently a godmother, I have developed a great interest in personalized kids gifts and all items which allow you to customize and make the gift or occasion your own.

For a Greek Orthodox Christening, the godparent is charged with bringing everything the child needs for the baptism to the church, and the christening shops here in Cyprus have a wonderful array of personalized gifts and christening items.

For example, a wooden toy box which doubles as a bench can be personalized with the child’s name in wooden letters on the front and decorated with your theme whether that be starfish, flowers or butterflies and of course the colours also matching your chosen designs.

Cake shops here offer a beautiful selection of christening cakes personalized with favourite cartoon characters, names, photos and small cupcakes for favours with the child’s name and christening date in icing (in the colour of your theme of course!).

I personally chose a large round pink box for my goddaughter’s christening. On it were beautiful lime green and fuschia pink butterflies and her name in cascading wooden hand painted letters, to match her room colours when she eventually takes the box home. Inside the box on the day of the christening were all the towels (wrapped in pink & green ribbons), her new beautiful christening dress and shoes, the pretty customized bottle containing olive oil for the christening and of course her christening cross. Her invitations also of course had the same theme and colours.

The tables at the beautiful mountain tavern where we had a celebratory lunch was decorated with small confetti strewn across of course in these colours; nowadays it is even possible to print your own confetti with names and not only colours.

My own daughter’s christening, which was shortly after this, had a butterfly theme, so we had butterfly balloons personalized with her name and the date, a chocolate cake with butterflies on it, all with my chosen pink and lemon colour theme.

It is also Greek Orthodox tradition for a candle to be lit during the baptism and this candle is dressed with organza and in this case also had yellow butterflies & pink ribbons on it to tie in with the theme. Aside from the gifts from the godparent, those guests invited to the christening also have a vast array of beautiful personalized gifts to choose from – one of the sweetest things I received was a wooden handmade sign saying ‘A Star is Born’ with my daughter’s name and date of birth on it.

A personalized keep sake box for baby’s first tooth and baby first curl was also a delightful present, and a beautiful bedtime story book with the name of my daughter as the star of the story is now essential reading before lights out! These are wonderful personally touching presents which leave a warm feeling behind, as the person bearing this gift went to the trouble to make it that little bit more special.

After receiving these gifts, I chose to never immediately run to the toy store for future gifts but to seek out that something a little more unique to give not only for the birth of a baby, but for christenings, birthdays and even Christmas. I think it is very important to remember that a personalized kids’ gift will be cherished for far longer than a regular toy. And with the very large variety of personalized items on offer nowadays, every taste and budget can be catered for.

Tips For The New Godparent

Your best friend, your sister, your brother, or another family member will soon have a new baby added to their family. They have chosen you over every other person in the world to be godparent to this most precious person in their lives. You are excited that they thought enough of you to ask you to take on this responsibility. You have never been a godparent and you thought of declining but your friend or family member is depending on you. You can’t let them down. So, you say, “Yes.”

You were christened or dedicated, as it is called in some churches, years ago. Uncle Harry and Aunt Jane were asked to be your godparent. But, somehow you never felt they understood the responsibility or just didn’t live up to it and there should be more to being a godparent than the occasional gift you received. You want to do the job right. But, you are not really sure what the job requires. You definitely don’t want to turn to Uncle Harry and Aunt Jane for advice. You are thinking, “What am I to do to fulfill the responsibility I just committed to?” This article will save the day for you. The following provides the job description of a godparent.

History

From The History of Godparents By Professor Ian Markham and the Revd Giles Legood
Co-authors – The Godparent’s Handbook (SPCK, 1997), we learn that “Originally the need for Godparents (or sponsors as they used to be called) arose when people converted to Christianity from another religion. In the ancient world, there were many religions each with different practices and beliefs. When members of a different religion (what Christians then called pagans) decided that they wanted to become Christians, they would offer themselves for baptism. They would have to approach the local Bishop (the person who had pastoral responsibility for Christians in a particular town) who would want to be reassured of the genuineness of the decision. Converts would then be asked to find a Christian friend who would vouch for them. This friend would undertake to the Bishop that they would support the convert and ensure that s/he would be helped to become a faithful member of the church.”

“In the second century the idea arose of having a sponsor for babies when they were baptized. In many ways it was a natural extension of the existing practice for adults. In the same way that non-Christians received help to grow into their new faith so, it was felt, did a baby.”

God Parenting Today

As I researched godparents, I discovered that godparent is not a legal guardian, someone to remembers birthdays with generous gifts, or someone you can always call on to baby-sit. These are important roles and if practiced will no doubt bring much pleasure to your child over the years.

My research also revealed that all churches and belief systems share the same overall goal. Godparents are adults who are dedicated to the spiritual and moral development of a child. Expectations can vary from church to church or between Christians and non-Christians.

Associated with the church and with baptism

Associated with baptism in some churches, the responsibilities of the godparent includes:

1. Praying for their godchild regularly 2. Setting an example of Christian living 3. Helping their godchild to grow in the faith of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, in which he was baptized 4. Encouraging their godchild to follow Christ and avoid evil 5. Helping their godchild to look forward to confirmation.
Associated with the church and not associated with baptism

In churches that practice Believers Baptism, the child must be mature enough to make the decision to follow Christ him or herself before being baptized. Therefore, the responsibilities of the godparent vary in a very significant way from those practicing infant baptism. The responsibilities include:
1. Praying for their godchild regularly 2. Setting an example of Christian living 3. Helping their godchild to grow in the faith of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, to the point they are able to make the decision to follow Christ on their own. 4. Encouraging their godchild to follow Christ and avoid evil 5. Helping their godchild to look forward to becoming a Christian.
Not associated with the church

The non-believer, those with no belief in God, will often ask one to serve as godparent to their child. Usually, they are not expecting their child to be led or trained in the way of Christ. They are providing a way for their child to get a good moral and ethical example to follow.

With the above information, you can approach your new godparent responsibility with confidence. However, I recommend a discussion with the parent where you share your understanding of the godparent role and get their understanding as well. Being asked to be a godparent is an opportunity to have a permanent and positive effect on a life and it is a great honor. You will want to perform it as well as you can.

African-American Wedding Music

What makes your wedding uniquely African-American?

It’s easy to adopt Western traditions. Even in Africa, brides are choosing to go with Western-style weddings.

You can preserve your heritage in your wedding with African-American wedding music. What does this mean exactly?

Most couples have their own taste in music and that usually means the popular music of the day. But let’s explore the roots of African-American music for your African-American wedding music…

Spirituals

Blues

Rags

Jazz

Swing

Perhaps these styles don’t seem like they will fit into YOUR wedding, but look deeper.

If you are having a Christian ceremony, the spiritual fits well into the wedding. The spiritual is one of the most significant genres of American music. Yes, many of them are mournful, speaking of hope beyond present day circumstances, but many are stirring and uplifting, professing their faith. Try A little more faith in Jesus…

All I want, All I want, All I want is a little more faith in Jesus

Whenever we meet you here we say, A little more faith in Jesus

What’s the order of the day? A little more faith in Jesus.

I tell you now as I told you before,

A little more faith in Jesus,

To the promise land I’m bound to go,

A little more faith in Jesus.

What an exciting way to start a joyous occasion!

The blues are another uniquely African-American musical form. Now you might think the blues are just way too depressing for a happy wedding day. Blues music reflected the newly-acquired freedom of slaves in America. There are many songs that have a sad origin, but in the context of a happy wedding, work well. Consider, for example, Can’t help lovin’ that man of mine from the movie “Show Boat.” Yes, she lost her man in the movie, but he’s all yours on your wedding day and the words convey a beautiful sentiment…

Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly,

I gotta love one man ’til I die,

So I can’t help lovin’ that man of mine.

Rags or rag-time – another great African-American tradition. Ever heard of Scott Joplin? This pianist extraordinaire practically invented the idiom. If you saw the movie “The Sting,” you heard a lot of rags. This style predated jazz and reached its popularity in the first two decades of the 20th century. Most rags are upbeat and could work as prelude music, and would be fantastic during the cocktail hour or during dinner. You could hire a pianist to play a selection of rags.

Jazz is the epitome of African-American art and is fabulous African-American wedding music. All you need to do is hire a great jazz band and your reception will be awesome. And don’t forget that swing!

Jazz can work well in the ceremony as well. Embraceable You and The Nearness of You are great jazz vocal solos as the mothers are seated or when the bridal party is entering.

Drums – If you want something really exciting and truly African, why not process down the aisle to a traditional African drum beat with musicians dressed in traditional garb? Contact your local university music department, music union, or music store, and ask if they know of any African drum ensembles. Or do an on-line search for an African drum ensemble.

Make your wedding a true cultural heritage experience with African-American wedding music.
